Diane Allwood Egerton was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba in 1954. She graduated from the University of Western Ontario (gold medal for language and literature) in 1976. In 1977 she obtained her first employment in the production/editorial department at the University of Toronto Press. When she left UTP in 1982 she began working as a freelance editor and writer. It was only in 1997 that she focused her interest on her Irish heritage and in the same year Diane published an illustrated article on the Ulster sculptor and illustrator Sophia Roseamund Praeger. Positive response to that article led to her researching a biography of Lacy Mabel Annseley.
