Product Description

Before the Plantation of Ulster, two Ayrshire Scots -- James Hamilton and Hugh Montgomery -- pioneered a massive migration from the Lowlands of Scotland to County Antrim and County Down. Starting in May 1606, over 10,000 mainly Presbyterian Lowland Scots made the three-hour voyage across the North Channel, beginning a process that was to eventually transform Ulster into an industrial powerhouse.

In the late 1860s, two volumes were published, which drew largely on 17th century manuscripts to tell the story of the Hamilton and Montgomery families and their followers. The two volumes were:

1. The Hamilton manuscripts, printed from the original, and edited by T.K. Lowry (Belfast 1867)
2. The Montgomery manuscripts (1603-1706), compiled from family papers by William Montgomery, of Rosemount, Esq.; and edited with notes, by Rev. George Hill (Belfast 1869)

To buy the two volumes from a second-hand dealer today could set you back £700 GBP / $1350 USD. Now you can buy a facsimile text-searchable Acrobat PDF e-book editions of both on a double CD-ROM, for only £10.

These volumes are considered standard texts for those wishing to explore the history of 17th century Ulster and the migration of thousands of Scots to the north of Ireland in this period. Containing information on many of these early settlers, these volumes are a 'must-have' for family historians trying to track down ancestors in 17th century Ulster.
