Abstract: The memoirs of Frederick Rodgers are a personal account of his life and family history. They are a good example of what can be achieved by documenting a personal or family history and are recommended reading for anyone attempting to write an account of their own family history, or interested in drafting their memoirs.

The author states:

My story opens as I leave Belfast at age sixteen to join the Royal Navy as a Boy Seaman. Crossing the Irish Sea I think back to the time where it all began. My parents' births, how they meet, marry and raise six children. The troubled times in which they struggled with poverty and war. The loss of our mother on Boxing Day 1939 when I'm just eleven months old. Living through the Belfast Blitz of 1941, then moving to Scotland with my eldest sister. Adopted by Lily and her naval husband. We later move south to London, losing everything in 1944 when our flat is struck by a V1 Rocket. I come of age living in a variety of places in post war Britain. A growing resentment develops as I try to regain my identitiy... Finally free, I return to Ireland at age thirteen only to find myself a stranger in my own family. I make my first adult decision taking charge of my uncertain future by enlisting in the navy. The story is one of pain and sadness, courage and humour.
